Dude, Where's My iPhone?

Apr 18, 2014

Your iPhone is more than a toy (though it’s definitely that, too). It’s also a lifeline when emergencies arise, and an expensive device to replace if it’s lost for good. Sooner or later, we’re all going to lose one, even if it’s just for a few minutes. But you can have some peace of mind with a built in tool called “Find My iPhone.”

Find My iPhone allows you to locate, lock, or erase your iPhone and prevents it from being erased or reactivated without your password.

First, click on the “Settings” icon on the home screen:

Second, click on the “iCloud” bar:

Third, scroll down to the “Find My iPhone” bar.  Switch it “on”:

Those three steps turn the app on.  If you lose your iPhone somewhere, this will work as long as the device is powered on and in an area with cellular service or WiFi.  But act fast – it won’t work if the battery has died or if a thief turns it off.

Then, just go to the website www.icloud.com and sign in to the site with your Apple ID and password. Click on “Find My iPhone” and a map will appear showing where your device is currently located.

Go check your settings now! Make sure Find My iPhone is turned on!
